Would like to hear a lawyer's take on whether this is actually fraud. A donation coerced via lawsuit. Even without the added twist that it was from a government body, this sounds pretty shady.

I think that’s probably correct, but I’ve also read that if coercion or pressure were involved it could be considered fraudulent. And your other point is well taken, considering who is running the government right now. Still, I think it’s something that should be explored. Thanks for checking it out.

I have run this by a friend who works for a law firm. He thought it was a long shot. If Meta has agreed to a “nonprofit” donation as part of a settlement, the only way it could run afoul of the law would be if the money was not used for the purposes of the nonprofit. Those rules are extremely broad. If it’s a matter of tax deduction, that becomes an IRS matter, and the IRS is now fully MAGA-fied. ☹️
