Trump’s Model Isn’t Hitler. It’s Putin—with a Constitution to Dismantle
Donald Trump isn’t staging a military coup. He doesn’t need to. He’s channeling the authoritarianism of Vladimir Putin, crafted to look like democracy while hollowing it out from the inside.
This is not Nazi Germany redux. It’s the 21st-century autocracy playbook: elections without legitimacy, courts without independence, laws weaponized against the public, and a media environment flooded with disinformation.
Here’s the model Trump channels:
Putin’s Russia: Rule through oligarchs, legal manipulation, and performative elections. Trump’s economic favoritism, loyalty-purging of the civil service, and threats to jail political opponents follow the same pattern.
Orbán’s Hungary: Use of constitutional amendments and judicial reshaping to lock in minority rule. Trump’s allies have already telegraphed plans to rewrite the Constitution via Article V conventions and dismantle federal oversight.
Erdogan’s Turkey: Criminalizing dissent. Trump has promised to prosecute journalists, purge the Department of Justice, and eliminate independent oversight—tools Erdogan used to entrench himself.
These regimes do not abolish democracy overnight. They corrode it, legally, step by step.
Trump isn’t violating the law. He’s learning to rewrite it in his own image.
And unless we act now, our Constitution becomes not a safeguard—but a tool of the next strongman.
