The old American expression “too big for your britches” dates back to the early 1800s. It began as a literal observation about children growing faster than their clothes, but it quickly took on a figurative meaning: arrogance, overreach, or trying to play a part that doesn’t fit. In other words, acting more important than you really are.

DOJ has been reduced to his strap-on — wielded for dominance and screwing his enemies rather than serving the law. This isn’t governance. It’s performance revenge, vindictive prosecution, and it comes at the cost of dismantling institutions that once claimed to stand for impartial justice.

This is the pattern we’ve seen time and again. Trump calls Russia a “paper tiger,” as if mocking a geopolitical rival proves his strength. He goes after Jimmy Kimmel, trying to bully satire off the airwaves, and fails spectacularly. He directs prosecutions against those he sees as disloyal, even while his own inner circle rots with corruption and betrayal.

Like Biff in Back to the Future, Trump thrives on intimidation. He looms, he sneers, he steals your lunch money, and he convinces the crowd he’s untouchable. But Biff’s power was always fragile — a bully’s bluff that falls apart once someone finally fights back. Trump is no different. Strip away the fear, the props, and the swagger, and what’s left is not a strongman but a man desperate to keep up the illusion of strength.

Each of these moves may feel powerful in the short term, but they’re the definition of overreach. Sooner or later the seams of the britches split.

At the core of it, Trump has mistaken the presidency for a dictatorship. He treats the office not as a responsibility but as a costume of absolute power he believes he can wear forever.

But the stitching has started to unravel — in the courts, in public opinion, and within his brittle coalition — and the whole outfit is coming apart. His corruption is bursting at the seams.

Meanwhile, just this week, Trump insulted the entire world at the United Nations, reducing himself to an international laughingstock. At home, he is pushing the government toward shutdown by refusing to meet with Democrats and threatening to fire federal employees, leaving the nation more vulnerable to hostile acts. And looming behind it all are the Epstein files — with enormous sums being spent by those desperate to keep their names hidden.

Trump promised to bring the country together, and he has — but it’s in opposition to him.
