Trump Doesn’t Understand the Meaning of Victory—or History
Donald Trump just announced he’s renaming May 8th as “Victory Day for World War II” and November 11th as “Victory Day for World War I.”
He wants us to stop honoring peace and start celebrating military dominance.
Here’s the problem:
May 8th is already VE Day—Victory in Europe.
November 11th is Veterans Day—formerly Armistice Day, marking the end of WWI and a global hope for peace, not conquest.
Trump’s version of “victory” isn’t about sacrifice, diplomacy, or the price of war. It’s about ego, spectacle, and rewriting history to feed a delusion of American exceptionalism based on brute force.
We already honor those who served. What we don’t need is a leader who sees every moment in history as a branding opportunity for himself.
We don’t need renamed holidays.
We need restored truth—and real leadership.
