Triage for Sanity
A Soft Protocol for Staying Human When the World Stops Making Sense
Some days the news doesn’t just rattle you—it breaks something open.
The body tightens. The breath flattens. The soul says, “I can’t hold this much.”
You know the feeling.
It’s the same one that keeps people stuck in the scroll, panicked in their kitchens, lashing out at strangers, or going completely numb.
So let’s step out of the fire for a moment.
I’m a nurse. I’ve sat beside people at the edge of death, at the edge of madness, and at the edge of despair. And one thing I know: there is always a next step—if you slow down and breathe enough to take it.
This is the triage I offer—not for trauma to the body, but for trauma to the soul.
⸻
1. Name the Alarm
Say out loud what your brain is afraid of.
Not to dramatize it. To disarm it.
“I’m scared martial law is coming.”
“I think we’ve already lost our democracy.”
“I feel abandoned, invisible, and useless.”
Truth calms the nervous system. Even painful truth.
⸻
2. Ground in Something Real
Touch something that’s not a screen.
● Drink water
● Walk barefoot
● Touch a tree, a pet, or a pillow
● Breathe like your lungs are yours
You are not just a witness to collapse.
You are a body. And your body deserves care.
⸻
3. Choose a Focus for One Hour
Not forever. Just one hour.
Ask:
“What matters to me right now?”
“What can I influence today?”
Maybe it’s sending one email.
Maybe it’s protecting one child.
Maybe it’s resting on purpose.
This is how we rebuild sanity: one grounded hour at a time.
⸻
🌬️ Final Thought
This world is loud. Frantic. Manipulative.
You are not.
You are allowed to pause.
You are allowed to feel.
You are allowed to respond from wisdom, not reaction.
If you’re holding too much—set something down.
If you’re lost in the noise—step back into your breath.
If you’re frozen—start here.
The only thing stronger than chaos is a calm human who remembers what matters.
