In 2022, the homicide rate in red states averaged 8.5 per 100,000 residents. In blue states, the rate was 6.4 per 100,000. That means red states had a 33 percent higher murder rate than blue states. So much for the “tough on crime” narrative.

Looking back over the last five years, from 2018 through 2022, the trend held steady. On average, red states posted homicide rates about 30 percent higher than their blue counterparts. Over the last ten years, the picture becomes even clearer. In the early 2010s, red states ran about 20 percent higher. By 2014, the gap had widened above 30 percent. In 2019, it peaked at 44 percent higher. By 2022, it eased back but still sat at 33 percent higher. The long view tells us this is not a blip. It is a structural pattern.

The data dismantles the myth that Democrats “cause” crime. Instead, the numbers suggest something deeper. Poverty, inequality, and gun access drive violence more than party labels. States with weaker gun laws—overwhelmingly red—see higher homicide rates. Conservative talking points about “blue cities” are projection, not reality. In psychological terms, this is accusation in the mirror—blaming the other side for what your own side does worse.

Trump and his allies continue to paint America’s cities as war zones. But the facts show that violence is disproportionately higher in Republican-dominated areas. That’s not just hypocrisy—it’s policy failure. And it’s time to stop letting the GOP weaponize crime statistics while ignoring their own backyard.
