Sona vs. Standoff Darwinism: Are We Splitting as a Species?
This post builds on my earlier reflection, “The Great Fork,” about what feels like a deep and maybe irreversible split in human behavior. What started as a weird thought—are we still one species?—has started to feel like a real question with evolutionary weight behind it.
Lately, I’ve been wondering if we’re watching a branching event—a kind of behavioral speciation.
Not between humans and some new cyborg future, but between two rival human survival strategies that no longer speak the same language.
So I’m naming them:
⸻
Sona Darwinism:
The survival strategy of empathy, story, harmony, and shared power.
• Cooperation is key
• Progress through listening, adaptation, and collective care
• Power is earned, shared, or checked
• Truth evolves through dialogue
• Survival is linked to mutual well-being
This is the branch that leads to democracy, peace-building, and sustainable justice. It’s slow, reflective, and deeply human. But it’s also fragile.
⸻
Standoff Darwinism:
The survival strategy of loyalty, dominance, threat, and spectacle.
• Power is taken and held
• Progress through intimidation and control
• Truth is what the strong say it is
• Fear is more efficient than trust
• Survival is about winning at all costs
This branch thrives on black-and-white thinking, enemy creation, and emotional contagion. It’s adaptive in chaos—and terrifyingly scalable.
⸻
Here’s the hard part:
Both are human.
Both evolved in us.
But right now, they feel like they’re becoming incompatible.
What happens when half a species runs on story and the other half on spectacle?
When one side whispers “We’re all connected,” and the other side shouts “Obey or die”?
We used to think this was just about politics. I don’t think that anymore.
I think it’s about cognitive divergence.
And I’m not sure it can be reconciled.
⸻
So what now?
Do we fight to merge the branches again?
Or do we accept that something more primal is happening—and build protections for those trying to evolve in peace?
Because while Standoff Darwinism is loud, flashy, and full of flags…
Sona Darwinism is the part of us that tells stories, builds bridges, and feels grief when others are hurting.
It’s quieter.
But it might be our only way forward.

Which branch are you feeding?

we each have these expressions. what we are seeing is unhealed generational trauma and how privilege prevented the victors from having to work on their shit, and now they feel marginalized by a world who learned to alchemize their pain. but these people cannot alchemize a thing they refuse to feel. it’s obvious to look at trump et al and not see their numbness and their inability to focus long enough on another person to coregulate nervous systems with them really hear them. this isn’t evolution: it is the fragility of white men and their enablers (hoping their fealty will obscure their marginality and save them from abandonment) who cannot deal with complex reality and use their unprocessed childhood anger to take a hatchet to the world. this is a tale as old as time.
