He Told the Press They Were in Danger—For Doing Their Job
“You are even in danger from Iranian retaliation by just talking to me right now.”
— Donald J. Trump, June 20, 2025
This is not just another Trump quote.
It’s a threat — disguised as a warning — aimed directly at the free press.
Today, while standing in front of reporters at the White House, Trump uttered one of the most chilling sentences of his presidency: that journalists might be “in danger” just for speaking to him.
Not because of anything he would do, of course. No — the danger, he claimed, would come from Iran. A vague, external enemy. One that hates him so much, he suggested, that anyone in his proximity could become collateral damage.
This is how authoritarianism works. It never starts with tanks. It starts with words like these.

WHAT HE REALLY MEANT
Let’s strip away the performance and get to the core:
1. “You’re in danger — not because of me, but because of my enemies.”
→ This is a classic abuser’s deflection. It shifts the blame outward, while quietly building a case that being around Trump is inherently unsafe.
2. “If something happens to you, that’s on Iran — or whoever hates me.”
→ Trump is trying to preemptively offload accountability. If violence comes, he’s already built the alibi.
3. “Stop questioning me. It’s not safe for you.”
→ This is the real message. Not a literal directive, but a psychological warning. Don’t poke the bear. Don’t ask hard questions. You’re putting yourself at risk. Whether that risk is real or not, the fear does the work.
This is the kind of rhetoric that authoritarian leaders have always used to chill free speech without directly censoring it. It’s the difference between a guard at the gate and a sign that reads: “Enter at your own risk.”
When Trump speaks like this, he’s testing the water.
If no one pushes back, he’ll escalate. He always does.
The press corps must not only report the quote — they must decode it. Because this was not a moment of concern for journalists’ safety.
It was a threat.
And it is a threat.
Disguised as protection.
And intended to silence.
